I think this fascination with suicide also goes back to your remarks about the unseriousness of the modern world and modern youth. It's the only thing they can do something that will be actually taken seriously.
Some suicides don't happen on the outside. There are probably plenty of incredible young boys who were so stifled and tortured by the boredom of the modern world that they simply shut off and stopped trying. Became midwit redditors because it was easier than trying to pull themselves out of the pit they found themselves in.
Not gonna lie, I’ve always thought it was mischevious. Autocorrect must just correct me every time I spell it so I never even notice. I pronounce it mischevious as well. Am I retarded?
I just can’t understand suicide. I find it somewhat understandable only when there is a loss of agency, but usually this loss of agency is a perception thing. It isn’t like slaves literally in chains jumping from the ships because they don’t want to dishonor themselves with a life of humiliation. It’s usually when people have ambitions they can’t reach or which are contradictory.
To an animal, suicide is not even able to be imagined. All there is is the will to live. What life is isn’t even thought about. Even when animals lose the will to live, they just stop living. They don’t seek to hasten their death, except as noble sacrifice for their species. They don’t contemplate their death or their self whatsoever, so it is not suicide
This feels much in the same vein as those who frequently “trauma dump” or “vent”; it’s a means to be taken seriously without any of the commitment to being a serious person
I distinctly recall getting in trouble in middle school for stating that those who commit suicide deserve it. After all, who else could choose to do it but you? I'd be interested to hear your ponderings on depression as it is treated in the modern world and how it relates to suicide as stated here.
My great-uncle served in Vietnam and committed suicide in 2019, he just sat outside one day, had a drink and blew his head open with a makarov. I agree that many aspects of our society have pushed death to the backs of most peoples minds, this was a very good read.
I find myself thinking about death fairly often, I think it’s healthy and a sign of intelligence beyond what’s being presented in society. I recently had a conversation with a friend pertaining to how life may pan out in the next 20 years for us. We spoke about where we would see ourselves, what would we have wanted to accomplish and what challenges we may see coming.
Surprisingly, death wasn’t on his mind in the slightest. He assumes his parents will live to see their late 80s-90s, and that none of the people he loves and relies on now will just die unexpectedly.
Yet another symptom of ironic humor rot, it's very sad to see the state of what is considered "relatable" humor. No, I do NOT want to blow my head off with a shotgun every waking moment because I'm too pessimistic and cynical to find any joy in life! I love living, even if every day isn't filled with constant dopamine/serotonin release!
My first experience with suicide was in 6th grade when the teacher said my test score was 2 points off of getting cheetos so I tried strangling myself to death with my lanyard/badge thing.

“Suicide is a temporary solution to a permanent problem”

Nothing poetic about a completely pathetic and forgettable life?
